Family photos aren’t just about capturing smiles—they’re about preserving connection, personality, and the beautiful chaos of life as it is right now. As a photographer (and a mum myself), I know that getting kids ready for a session can feel like herding cats in fancy outfits. But I promise—it doesn’t have to be stressful.
Here are my tried-and-true tips to help your little ones feel relaxed, playful, and ready to shine.
1. Pick the Right Time of Day
Children are at their best when they’re well-rested and fed. For most families, this means aiming for late morning or early evening—after naps, before dinner, and when the light is soft and golden. If your child has a particular rhythm, let’s work around it.
2. Bring Snacks (and maybe a bribe or two)
Healthy, non-messy snacks like crackers, fruit slices, or mini sandwiches can be lifesavers. A little treat promised for after the session like a playground visit or hot chocolate can also work wonders as motivation.
3. Let Them Help Choose Their Outfit
Giving kids a say in what they wear (within your chosen palette) helps them feel confident and involved. If they’re excited about their sparkly boots or favorite hat, let’s roll with it—it adds personality to your photos.
4. Pack a Comfort Item
Whether it’s a beloved teddy, a cosy blanket, or a superhero cape, comfort items can help kids feel safe and settled. Sometimes they even sneak into a few frames—and those often become the most cherished.
5. Frame It as an Adventure
Instead of “we’re going to take photos,” try “we’re going to play in the park with Amanda” or “we’re going to have a fun family adventure.” When kids see it as a game or outing, they’re more likely to relax and enjoy the moment.
6. Don’t Stress About Perfection
The best photos aren’t posed—they’re real. A giggle, a pout, a wild hair moment… these are the memories you’ll treasure most. I’ll guide you gently through the session, but I also leave space for spontaneity and silliness.
Final Thoughts
Your family session is about connection, not control. If your child needs a moment, we’ll take it. If they want to run barefoot through the grass, I’ll be right there capturing the joy. My goal is always to make your experience feel easy, affirming, and full of connection.
So breathe deep, pack the snacks, and let’s make some magic together.
