What to wear for your family photoshoot

One of my most frequently asked questions is what to wear for a photoshoot.
Choosing outfits for your family photoshoot doesn’t need to feel overwhelming. The goal is simple: wear clothing that feels comfortable, looks timeless, and photographs beautifully. With a few easy guidelines, you can create a look that feels natural and effortless without needing to buy a whole new wardrobe.
Start with soft, neutral tones
Neutrals always photograph well. Think:
beige
cream
oatmeal
soft browns
muted greens
dusty blues
These tones work beautifully outdoors in Taranaki, especially at the beach, in the forest, or during golden hour. They keep the focus on your connection rather than the clothes.
Co-ordinate, don’t match
Instead of everyone wearing the exact same colour, aim for outfits that work together without being identical. Choose a small palette maybe creams, soft greens, and light browns then let each person wear something within those tones. It keeps the overall look cohesive while still feeling natural and effortless.
Choose textures over patterns
Textures like linen, knits, cotton, and denim add depth without distraction. If you love patterns, keep them subtle small florals or gentle stripes are perfect. Avoid bold prints, logos, or anything neon, as they tend to dominate the image.
Comfort is key
You’ll be moving, cuddling, walking, and playing. Choose clothing that lets you relax:
dresses that flow
shirts that aren’t too stiff or tight
shoes you can walk in - or go barefoot on the beach
kids in outfits they won’t fuss over
When you feel comfortable, it shows.
Think about layers
Layers photograph beautifully and add variety:
cardigans
light jackets
textured knits
wraps or shawls
They also give us options during the session without needing a full outfit change.
Outfit ideas for each family member
Mums: Flowy dresses, linen sets, soft knits, earthy tones, simple jewellery.
Dads: Neutral tees or shirts, chinos, light denim, muted greens or browns.
Kids: Rompers, simple dresses, knit sweaters, overalls, bare feet at the beach.
Maternity: Long dresses that highlight your bump, soft fabrics, earthy colours.
A few things to avoid
Large logos
Bold patterns
Bright neon colours
Anything too tight or uncomfortable
Busy prints that clash with the rest of the family
Final thoughts
I hope this guide gives you some inspiration,
whether you’re pulling pieces from your own wardrobe or treating yourself to something new. The most important thing is that you feel relaxed and comfortable. When you feel good, your photos will reflect it.
